How to light up a sphere without a light source with FumeFX in 3ds max 9. The whole process (here condensed to 5 minutes) took about an hour on a 2.8 GHz; some values could be lowered for efficiency's sake. Not shown here: fluid mapping, which could greatly increase realism, and a better gradient for the smoke, which turned out to be a boring dark gray (although that is how it is in real life).
